Traci Sexton: A Patient’s Perspective on Healthcare (Part 2)

Jan 16, 2024 E169 00:19:46

It’s part 2 of A Patient’s Perspective on Healthcare from Traci Sexton on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Traci is from Indiana, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. Her story involves her own experiences being diagnosed with arthritis at age 7 and her experiences with her daughter Lily who has transverse myelitis. Her insights are extremely interesting. If you did not catch part 1, I would encourage you to go back and listen.

Here are 3 things that stood out as his word in this part of the interview with Traci Sexton giving a patient’s perspective on healthcare:

  • Medicine needs to be a true collaboration. Patients nor practitioners can be counted on to know everything. Needs to be an allowance for “I don’t know.”
  • There is a need for advocacy in the healthcare system beyond just the family members. Advocates can help navigate things like access to care, billing, and communication with the practitioner.
  • There is a lack of communication between healthcare professionals. An effective communication system where information is shared may help practitioners to properly diagnose and treat the patients that come into their practices.
